I am a veterinarian who travels overseas each year on livestock vessels. My job is to provide 24 hour veterinary care to the sheep and cattle on board the vessel, additional scientific expertise during the voyage and independent reports to the Australian Government on deck conditions, nutrition, and any animal health or welfare matters.
Even though the animals on board are really well cared for, I’m now working on a number of research projects to further improve their welfare, and make their voyage more comfortable. I work with farmers, agents, feedlotters, exporters, shipping companies and overseas customers, gathering information and developing improvements to ensure Australian animals arrive fit and healthy at their overseas destination.
I am proud that Australia leads the world in this area of research.
