Five things you didn't know about Australian livestock exports:

Fact 1:

The Australian livestock export industry cares about animal welfare. Research has found that Australia is the best in the world at looking after the animals it exports.

Fact 2:

Not all countries have the same standards for handling animals as Australia does – that’s why we make sure we encourage everyone to look after their animals by showing other countries better ways of caring for animals and making sure that we lead by example.

Fact 3:

Australian livestock exports are important to the Australian economy. The industry employs 13,000 Australians, including many farmers in rural areas, and is valued at A$1.8 billion.

Fact 4:

A huge number of livestock are exported from Australia. In 2006 we exported over 4 million sheep, over half a million cattle and around 50 000goats.

Fact 5:

Our main customers are:

  • Sheep: Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Bahrain, Oman, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Israel, Malaysia, and Singapore.
  • Cattle: Indonesia, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, the Philippines, Jordan, Japan, Mexico, China, Russian Federation, Israel and Brunei.
  • Dairy cattle: China, Mexico, Russian Federation, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates
  • Goats: Malaysia, Indoesia, Thailand, Singapore, the Philippines and Brunei.
